What is silage film and what is it used for?

Silage film (also called silage wrap, bale wrap or agricultural stretch film) is a multilayer, UV-stabilised polyethylene stretch film used to wrap round and square bales of grass, hay, alfalfa or maize. It creates an airtight, oxygen-free seal so the forage ferments into high-quality silage and keeps its nutritional and organoleptic properties during storage.

Why should I use six layers of film instead of four when wrapping?

There are three reasons the film is under more strain today: modern balers produce larger and heavier bales; modern wrapping machines are much faster and more productive; and the climate has changed, with more sun exposure and fast-changing weather extremes such as drought, heavy rain and hail. Six layers give the safety margin needed to protect your feed.

Why should wrapped bales be stored on the flat side?

About twice as much film is wrapped on the flat side of a bale as on the round side. Storing bales on the flat side gives better protection against stubble in the field and against the elements (hail and sun). The bale also stays stable and is easier to transport later.

How can I protect wrapped bales from birds and animals?

Birds and small animals such as rodents and deer can make almost invisible micro-holes in the film. Air and moisture then enter the bale and cause mould and unwanted acids. Cover stored bales with special anti-bird nets - they last for many years, protect feed quality and also reduce the effect of solar radiation on the film.

How can I prevent mould on dry silage or hay bales?

Before wrapping, check the dry-matter content of the feed, the number of film layers and the pre-stretch setting. Dry bales can suffer internal condensation between the film and the feed because of large day-night temperature swings. Farmers in Northern Europe and the USA wrap at least twice as many layers for dry feed - and more than double for very dry alfalfa - because, like a double-glazed window, extra layers prevent condensation.

How do I stop the film width reducing too much after stretching?

Check the film width reduction on the first bale and at least once a day before wrapping. At optimum settings, 750 mm film should reduce to about 600 mm and 500 mm film to about 400 mm. If the film narrows by more than 20% in regular operation, reduce the machine speed. If that is not possible, do not use that machine and film combination - contact your machine dealer.

What happens if silage film is overstretched?

Overstretching causes excessive width reduction (layers do not bond), loss of covering force and colour, invisible loss of UV protection, loss of cling (the film tail does not stick to the bale) and excessive thinning, which reduces the mechanical strength of the film.
